Andhra Pradesh is gearing up for its Assembly elections scheduled for May 13, 2024, as announced by the Election Commission of India. The results, along with those of the Lok Sabha elections, will be declared on June 4, 2024.
In the previous 2019 elections, the YSR Congress Party had a landslide victory, securing 151 seats, while the incumbent Telugu Desam Party (TDP) managed only 23 seats. This was a significant downfall for the TDP compared to its performance in 2014 when it won 102 Assembly seats in alliance with the BJP.
This year, the political landscape has shifted, with the BJP, TDP, and Jana Sena, led by Pawan Kalyan, forming an alliance for both Lok Sabha and Assembly polls. In 2014, Jana Sena was an external supporter of the TDP-BJP alliance.
The seat-sharing arrangement for 2024 allocates six Lok Sabha and 10 Assembly seats to the BJP, 17 parliamentary and 144 state seats to the TDP, and two Lok Sabha and 21 Assembly seats to Jana Sena. Originally, Jana Sena was slated to contest more seats, but adjustments were made after the TDP joined the NDA coalition.
As the political stage sets for another round of elections, all eyes are on Andhra Pradesh to witness how this alliance will fare against the ruling YSR Congress Party.
